Medal vs OpusClip: instant replay vs AI VOD clipping
Medal vs OpusClip: Medal records moments as you play, OpusClip clips video you import later. Costs, limits and when to run both, as of 8 November 2026.
Medal and OpusClip do different jobs, so for most streamers this is not an either-or. Medal is a game recorder and clip host that you run while you play; OpusClip takes video you already have, including Medal.tv links, and cuts clips from it afterwards. Pick Medal if the problem is capturing moments as they happen, pick OpusClip if the problem is mining finished streams, and expect to use both if you want each.

Documented differences at a glance
As of 8 November 2026, from each vendor’s pages. “Not stated” means the pages we read do not say.
| Item | Medal | OpusClip |
|---|---|---|
| Job | Records and hosts game clips; free users can download, clip, edit, upload and share | Imports long video and returns clips |
| Runs | While you play, on your PC | Afterwards, on a file or link |
| Price | Free; Premium $9.99 a month or $7.99 a month billed annually (Medal blog, 17 June 2026); 14-day trial | Free $0; Starter $15 a month; Pro $29 a month or $174 a year; Business custom (pricing) |
| What you pay for | Premium perks; no meter | 1 credit per minute of imported video |
| Watermark | Premium lists “Removable watermarks”, which implies free clips carry one | Free has no watermark-free export; paid plans are watermark-free |
| Upload or length limits | 20 minutes without Premium; unlimited with Premium | Up to 10 hours per the video-length help article; local uploads 10GB on Free and Starter, 30GB from Pro, as listed |
| Upload quality | 1080p without Premium; original capture quality with Premium | Not applicable to source |
| Subtitles | Auto subtitles on Premium | Captions on all plans; animated templates |
| Twitch, Kick, YouTube import | Not a documented input | Twitch, Kick, YouTube, Medal.tv and others listed in the help article; its Plans article names Twitch and Medal.tv under Pro, with Free limited to YouTube and local files |
| Platforms | Windows desktop, iOS and Android, per Medal’s OBS comparison | Not stated on the pages we read |
| Finds moments in a finished stream | Not documented; auto-clipping works on game events while you play | Core feature |
Medal’s 20 and 30 minute figures are probably different tiers rather than a conflict, though Medal does not spell this out. Its June 2026 blog says Premium’s clip upload limit moved from 30 minutes to unlimited, and its Premium page gives 20 minutes as the cap without Premium. The price change log has the dated captures.
Capture versus after-the-fact clipping
Medal saves moments from the game on your PC, and OpusClip works from a recording that already exists. Medal’s own guide says its replay buffer holds the last 15 seconds to 10 minutes and that “in supported games the highlights save themselves”, which is the vendor’s description. Medal’s features page lists event detection for games including Fortnite, Valorant, League of Legends and Apex Legends. It can also record full sessions and drop hotkey bookmarks for later. Medal is not documented as a tool that reads a finished stream VOD and proposes clips.
OpusClip works the other way round. It has no access to your game while you play; it needs a file or link afterwards. Its import help article lists Twitch, Kick and Medal.tv, and says links must be public or unlisted. The Plans article, however, names Twitch and Medal.tv under Pro, not Free or Starter, and the sources list does not split by plan. So a Medal clip link can be fed into OpusClip on a plan that includes that source, as long as that clip’s sharing allows it. That is the one documented point where the two connect, and what OpusClip does with a Medal link beyond importing it is not described there.
Reasoning, not measurement: capture tools save only what you decided to keep or what their rules matched, so a moment you did not expect never gets saved. A VOD clipper can find that moment later but only if the stream was recorded and still exists. On Twitch, past broadcasts are kept for 60 days for Partners, Prime and Turbo users, 14 days for Affiliates and 7 days for everyone else, so older streams can disappear before you clip them.
Medal or OpusClip: which fits your situation
Choose by where your best moments are and whether you stream at all.
| Your situation | Pick | Why | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| You play ranked or with friends and do not stream | Medal | OpusClip needs a recording that you would not otherwise have | Auto-clipping depends on your game being supported |
| You stream 3 to 6 hours and want Shorts from it afterwards | OpusClip | It is the one built to take a Twitch or Kick link | Credits scale with minutes; gaming pick quality is unmeasured |
| You know the moment when it happens | Medal | A hotkey keeps it without any later search | You still need to edit vertically |
| You miss moments mid-game and only spot them later | OpusClip | It reviews the whole recording | The VOD must still exist |
| You stream and want both instant clips and later mining | Both | Different jobs, and only one documented link between them | Two subscriptions if you pay for both |
| You are on Mac or Linux | OpusClip | Medal’s desktop app is Windows only | You still need another way to record |
| You only share to friends on Discord | Medal | Share links are the product | The Premium page implies a watermark on free clips |
What each cannot do
Medal cannot stream your broadcast, per its OBS comparison, which lists live streaming as not supported. Its desktop app is Windows only, and its auto-clipping covers listed games. It also does not read a Twitch VOD after the fact on any page we read.
OpusClip cannot capture anything. It needs a recording, an accessible link and enough credits for the minutes you process. Its help article gives a 10-hour maximum video length, and we have no measurement of how it handles long stretches of gameplay without speech. Reasoning: because a stream can contain long quiet passages, expect to check any automated pick.
Cost comparison
Medal has no meter, and OpusClip’s cost grows with the minutes you import. Arithmetic from prices on 8 November 2026.
| Setup | Monthly billing | Yearly billing, per month | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medal Free + OpusClip Free | $0 | $0 | 60 OpusClip credits a month, Medal watermark |
| Medal Free + OpusClip Starter | $15 | Not offered | 150 credits a month |
| Medal Premium + OpusClip Starter | $24.99 | $22.99, Starter stays monthly | 150 credits, no Medal watermark |
| Medal Free + OpusClip Pro | $29 | $14.50 | 300 credits a month per pack |
| Medal Premium + OpusClip Pro | $38.99 | $22.49 | Both paid tiers |
Because OpusClip’s Plans article names Twitch and Medal.tv under Pro, the Free and Starter rows may not accept those links; check before relying on them. OpusClip’s rule is 1 credit per minute of imported video, so a 3-hour stream is 180 credits and a 4-hour stream 240, more than the 150 Starter lists. A month of 13 streams at 4 hours is 3,120 credits if you process everything, which is over ten Pro packs. Trimming to the part of the VOD you care about reduces that, because credits follow the processing timeframe you select. Details are on OpusClip pricing.
Medal Premium is worth paying for only if you need clean downloads, uploads over 20 minutes, original-quality uploads or subtitles. It does nothing for your OpusClip bill.
Using Medal and OpusClip together
The practical combination is Medal for moments you already know about and OpusClip for the rest of the stream.
- Run Medal while you stream or play, with your hotkey and auto-clipping for supported games. What it saves are moments you or its rules already chose.
- Share or post those directly. They do not need an AI clipper, which would only spend credits finding what you already picked.
- Send only the long recordings to OpusClip. Paste the Twitch or Kick VOD link before it expires, and narrow the processing timeframe to save credits.
- To send a Medal recording instead, use a public or unlisted Medal link. Medal’s 20-minute cap without Premium limits what you can upload there, so for a long session either use Premium or upload the local file to OpusClip.
Local upload size is the other limit. Arithmetic: 10GB across 4 hours is about 5.6 Mbps, and 30GB is about 16.7 Mbps. Check your recording’s bitrate first. Whether a free Medal watermark appears in video imported by link is not documented, so check one short clip before you rely on it.
Which to pick
- You want an always-on way to keep clutch moments and are happy to mark them: Medal.
- You have hours of streams and no time to scrub them: OpusClip, with the reminder that its gaming-moment quality is unmeasured.
- You want both: follow the steps above, and budget for Medal Premium only if the watermark or upload limits matter.
- You also want to compare Medal with a free local option: see Medal versus OBS replay buffer.
